VMware addresses key cloud problems with vCloud Director

Technology will tie private and public cloud computer platforms together

Virtualisation leader VMware has announced its vCloud Director, a technology
that will ensure the software provider will begin to deliver IT-as-a-service
(ITaaS).

VMware
said it wants its ITaaS strategy to provide "a complete platform for cloud
computing, spanning private, public and hybrid cloud environments."

Speaking at
VMworld
in San Francisco, VMware chief executive Paul Maritz said: "Two years ago we
announced our vision for ITaaS and this week we're taking significant steps to
ensure this strategy becomes reality."

Maritz said the strategy would help private and public sector organisations
to move towards a more business-centric ITaaS model which will replace the
support role it has provided until now.

VCloud Director would allow businesses with private clouds to be integrated
with public clouds and managed using the new technology. Maritz said that it
would be able to do so without compromising security or quality of service.

This open ecosystem will give customers a choice of infrastructure partners
and service providers; it will also provide application portability and choice
of clouds.

Exactly how vCloud Director will manage security and quality of service (QoS)
when integrating private and public cloud platforms will be detailed by Maritz
in a
keynote
speech at VMworld later today.

Security and QoS currently inhibit uptake of public cloud services.
